Across the Universe: Edge of the World - The Catholic Astronomer

Across the Universe: Edge of the World - The Catholic Astronomer

At the edge of the world, the top of the world, is a window of our world into the rest of the universe: the telescopes of the European Southern Observatory (ESO) in Chile. Nearby are other large observatories at Cerro Tololo, Las Campanas, and the Alma radio array at Chajnantor. These telescopes have shown how the expansion of our universe is accelerating; they’ve explored hundreds of planets around other stars; they’ve traced the motions of stars orbiting a super-massive black hole at the center of our Milky Way galaxy.

ISS : VISITE GUIDEE

Earth Day Haiti 2017

Earth Day Haiti 2017. (See also our Earth Day Haiti Page) (Earth Day Network)

We started as planned with a conference in the Community Library of Deschapelles. Some rain limited the public affluence as expected but we had a minimum of them to debate about the structure of the Earth and also its problem. The March For Science as been presented also (see some live coverage of this march), a way for us to participate in that March, because it is also OUR CAUSE as humans and scientific.

Then We have had our regional broadcast "Astronomie en Equilibre" and the today show was about the Earth Day. We used the same intervention plan. All has been done in Haitian Creole.

Here is an online version of the broadcast :

STEM on Station

“STEM on Station” connects students and teachers to the important research conducted on the International Space Station through a rich variety of hands-on activities, videos and up-to-the minute education news that help teachers enhance their K-12 curricula in the STEM fields of science, technology, engineering and mathematics. Becky Kamas, an education specialist at NASA’s Johnson Space Center in Houston, Texas, details some of the opportunities available, from talking to astronauts aboard the space station, conducting engineering design challenges in 3-D printing, and microgravity and biological research for future deep-space missions.

Futura Sciences

NASA's MAVEN reveals Mars has metal in its atmosphere

NASA's MAVEN reveals Mars has metal in its atmosphere: Mars has electrically charged metal atoms (ions) high in its atmosphere, according to new results. The metal ions can reveal previously invisible activity in the mysterious electrically charged upper atmosphere (ionosphere) of Mars.

Support Astronomy Developpement in Haiti

The team found that the metal ions behaved differently on Mars than on Earth. Earth is surrounded by a global magnetic field generated in its interior, and this magnetic field together with ionospheric winds forces the metal ions into layers. However, Mars has only local magnetic fields fossilized in certain regions of its crust, and the team only saw the layers near these areas. "Elsewhere, the metal ion distributions are totally unlike those observed at Earth," said Grebowsky.
