The leap years

Why do we add an extra day to the month of February every four years? Does it carry some cultural or historical significance? Does it relate to weather or agricultural cycles? Do we even need leap years? Dr. Michio Kaku visited with Jamie Wax on ‘CBS This Morning’ to offer real answers. Kaku explains the history, the math, and the science that all gave rise to the leap year as we know it. WATCH NOW!

Le voyage interstellaire bientôt à notre portée ?

Febuary Public Astronomy Talk

We had this afternoon (today Feb 27, 2016 at 6 PM) the regular meeting with the members of the association (Public Astronomy Talk).
We were discussing about the planet Mars. The core members were present and after a short PowerPoint presentation on the subject, a documatary film was projected ("Mars, the red planet").

Then the discussion was about the planet and the recent discovering of water on it.

One of the goal of the Haitian Astronomical Society is to make young Haitians interrested about astronomy. We try to engage them and have them informed and trained about the subject of astronomy. For this particular reason, we have scheduled a particular calendar distributed to members.
According to this calendar, each last saturday of a month, we have a meeting to inform and train about a subject on astronomy. This time then we were talking again about the planet Mars.

We are waiting for all interrested persons to be part of these meeting with video projection and discussion; But we understand too that since these regular meeting are done on the HQ of the association and at 5 H PM, some persons could not really participate even if they would like to. But we can not move for now since the projector we are using is in fact a roof-fixed one and owned by the institution where we are sharing office.

We would promise that we are currently applyng for a project to extend our public talk about astronomy. Please stay tuned as we may launch this project (for the extension of public astronomy talk.)

Asteroids & Cometes presented to children

One of the great moment of this week end was the presentation at the Comminity Library of Deschapelles about the comets & Asteroids (febuary 26, 2016 at 5 H PM).
Many children were effectively present.
This activity was inspired by Universe Awareness.

For more information about this kind of activity, please read here.

Here is the program for the week end

Astronomy activities in the block...

Here is the program for the week end

  • Febuary 25, 2016
    • New episod of the astronomy radio show "Atronomy en Equilibre" at the radio station Equilibre FM (90.9 FM) at 6 PM (Haitian Time). We will be talking tis time about the history of space exploration, space conquest. Of course, we will start by astronomy news for the week and then with the topic of the day. This emission could be reached too over the internet throu Youtube (Hangout On Air), Facebook where specific link will be provided and our Official Blog. The third part of the show will be answering question from phone calls or online interrogation (via Youtube, Facebook or our Chat system (SHA CHAT)). Phone cards as gifts will be available for the auditors answering well the questions. Global information about this activity could be seen here.
    • This activity is possible by the intervention of Astronomers Without Borders which sponsored our fundraising over Fiatphysica (see fundraising) throu the Big Impact Giving (BIG) Project. We are very proud to be the beneficiary of this project and we want to thanks all donors because they help make a difference.
    • Read also this nice article "A Radio Show to Connect Haiti and the Universe" written by M. Roberto Molar which has help us reach our fund raising goal. Many thanks to the Organizer: Christie McMonigal and to all the 9 backes (donors) who directly help us and also to all twitter followers who RT and like fund raising links.

  • Febuary 26, 2016
    • The Rendez Vous is at the Community Library of Deschapelles at 5 h PM (Haitian Time) where we will meet the children (and some adults too) to present them the topic "Asteroids and Comets". It will be a video projection followed by explanation and discussion aroud the subject. See the Facebook Page about this rendez-vous. This activity aims to raise awareness about the cosmos to the children as we follow Universe Awareness recommandations and our objectives in our organization chart. You may see our global orientaion for this kind of activity here since we are postulating to become the National Coordinator (NC) for Universe Awareness. We are working to set up a sustainable program for the children. And remember our outreach activity with some children on the football field of Deschapelles showing them a telescope as a scientific tool.
  • Febuary 27, 2016
    • That's coming the regular talk date with the members of the association and the general public, too. We have launched these meetings since December 2015 to inform and train them about astronomy. That's the meeting for the month of Febuary and we will be talking again about the planet Mars (Febuary 27, 2016 at 5 PM). See the Facebook Page for that event.
    • A calendar has been distributed to the associatiin members to schedule this activity. It is held usually at 5-6 PM (Haitian Time). And there is a non-obligatory participation fee of 5 GOURDES (U$ 0.08) usually used for electrical plant gas.
    • The meetings are held in the association HQ, but in fact we are sharing the numeric room of a school institution. They have a fixed projector (on the roof) we are using providing we have gas for electrical plant. We are actually planning to buy a mobile projector to have outreach astronomy public talk independantly and reaching more poeple about astronomy. We are planning a fund raising for March for that
  • Febuary 28, 2016
    • That the day for Board meeting. Usually, we cannot meet with all members as the same time, but we try. Members of the board are doing their professional activities as well as trying to do their best for the association activities. As I am working in Hospital Albert Schweitzer as OBGYN, I do my best too to reach our goals. Dr Gednard Clerveau in Port-au-Prince, with great experience in organization management, tracks administrative activities, M. Theogene Stinfil is whasing over the astronomical local club (Club Supernova). Dr Eliode Pierre, OBGYN and also journalist is doing his best to give us opportunity for national interview. View the Board members page or even watch this Youtube video about them.

The next episode of "Astronomie en Equilibre" is approaching...

Effectively on Febuary 25, we will be talking about the Space Conquest. MarcRony and I (Dr Narcisse) will be on the radio station "Equilibre FM" at 6 to 8 PM to present the subject.

As usual, we will start with news for the week, then we will present the space conquest, the beginning of man in space and where we are now. During the news moment, the activity at the Community Librairy of Deschapelles will be announced again, where the Comets and Asteroids will be presented to youngs presented for the show (febuary 27, 2016 at 5 h PM). You may see the Facebook Page of this activity here.

Then, at the end the emission on air ("Astronomie en Equilibre"), we will start asking questions to the public , giving them some phone cards for good answers.

During this week, we had an outreach activity with the children in the community to raise their awareness in astronomy. We presented the a telescope and the opportunity to look throu it, viewing the nature this time. We may propose another outreach activity to the public again.

This is a great week for us at the Haitian Astronomical Society. On next day on (saturday), we will be at Bon Repos (Port-au-Prince) for the usual end-month saturday afternoon where this time we will be talking again about the planet Mars .

So next, stay tuned for the new episiode of "Astronomie en Equilibre" at 90.9 FM. It will be live on Youtube chanel, Facebook and then our Offical Blog. Have more info about this program here.

We are doing our best to prepare and present the emission on air, one a week. Thanks to Astronomers Without Borders organizing fundraising for us. You may help us throu Fiatphysica link.

Telescope show with children at Deschapelles

As planned previously, we had that telescope show with children at Deschapelles (Haiti). The goal was to make them know about this scientific tool. We started at 4 H pm, showing them the environmental nature and explaining them we never have to look at the sun with this kind of telescopes.

It was a success and when we closed the show and moved back, there were still poeple coming.

We had to promise to come back on another day!!

We need support for this kind of outreach program. We are now in emergency for financing an Astronomy Radio Show. Click here to learn more and to help us (U$ 355.00).
